Germany and Hungary are through to the final of the European Open Championship. This was confirmed after Germany secured a convincing semi-final victory over Croatia. Hungary, meanwhile, needed extra time against Switzerland to secure their place in the final.

Croatia reached the semi-finals after winning all their group stage matches and then knocking out Romania in the quarter-finals. Germany, for their part, had won three of their four group stage matches before defeating Spain in the knockout stages.

At half-time, Germany led 19–15. In the second half, the Germans were dominant, winning the half 16–3 to secure a 35–18 victory.

The other semi-final between Hungary and Switzerland proved to be a much closer contest. Switzerland had impressed greatly earlier in the tournament with four consecutive group stage victories and a 14-goal win over Serbia in the quarter-finals. Hungary progressed after a somewhat more bumpy ride in the group stage, but demonstrated their capabilities by defeating France by ten goals in the quarter-finals.

After a closely fought contest, the score was 27–27 when the final whistle blew. Hungary proved the stronger side in extra time and won the semi-final 32–28.

The final will be played at Scandinavium on 3 July at 8.30 pm.

The European Open Championship is a national team tournament organised by the Partille World Cup in collaboration with the Swedish and European Handball Federations – held every other year for girls and every other year for boys. This year, the Under-16 girls’ teams are competing. The tournament also serves as a qualifier for the World Youth Championship in Morocco in October, to which the top two teams will advance.
